There are many factors to consider when trying to decide what type of business to start. There are many good reasons to start a particular type of business, but making a choice purely for the money is not a good idea.
Do it for Love
If you don’t love your business it will not be successful. Every day thousands of people start businesses with thoughts of making lots of money and living their dreams at the front of their minds. A small minority of these business may go on to be successful, but the majority are destined to fail.
Starting a business is hard work. It can take years to generate a healthy profit from a business. In the meantime, the entrepreneur will be required to work longer and harder than an employee with a steady paycheck. The financial rewards may follow for those who persist, but while a business is young and unprofitable it requires a lot of work for little financial reward.
An entrepreneur who chooses a business that he or she is passionate about will be able to push through the difficult times.
Every entrepreneur will hit the wall at least once during the startup phase of their business, and if they don’t enjoy producing the product or service at the core of their business, they will not be able muster the strength to carry on.
By starting a business that they are passionate about, the business owner will find satisfaction in serving their clients and watching something grow from their effort.
Take it from the Best of the Best
Many of the world’s great entrepreneurs who have made millions of dollars have continued running their businesses long after they became wealthy. Why? Because they love what they do.
Consider some of the world’s better known self-made billionaires – Steve Jobs, Donald Trump, and Richard Branson to name a few. Each of them could have sold their businesses decades ago and been left with more than enough money to live the high life for the rest of their lives. Instead, they have continued running their businesses because they enjoy the underlying products and services they provide.
The above list is only a tiny example to illustrate my point. There are thousands of examples of billionaires, millionaires, and well-off business owners all around the world who have become financially sound from their business ventures, but have continued running their businesses because they enjoy it.
If money is your main motivator you might be better off getting a job with a steady paycheck.

“An entrepreneur who chooses a business that he or she is passionate about will be able to push through the difficult times.”
Hi Mark, I really agree with you on this. Passion (for a business or otherwise) helps you keep discipline and follow-through challenges. If money is the motivation, most people can make a decent amount of money from skill/intelligence, but having passion is what will transform things into extraordinary.
You can definitely run out of steam if you’re not passionate about your business.
Good luck with your adventure by the way!
