How to Spot a Scam – Part 4

by Mark

This is the fourth post in a series of articles that will help you avoid scams and invest your time and money into legitimate business opportunities. You can find the whole series in the Business Scams section.

Typical Results

Most advertisements for business opportunities contain claims of typical results achieved by past and present business owners. If you have searched for a business opportunity on the internet or in the press before, you have probably seen hundreds of such claims.

There are two reasons why these claims are made.

The first reason is to put numbers in front of you as a form of hard evidence. Reading through paragraph after paragraph of claims about how wonderful a business opportunity is can be tedious. Quantifying a story with claims from supposed third parties such as “By following this system I made $5,000 in only my second month” can be quite convincing.

The second reason to include typical results when advertising a business opportunity is for social proof. By including testimonials from third parties, you are led to believe that the business has worked for other people, so why can’t it work for you?

Use Your Instinct

When evaluating a business opportunity is it important to use your instinct. Another way of putting this is to go with your gut feeling. We are all blessed with at least a little bit of common sense and it is imperative that you use it before accepting any invitation to join a business venture.

Does it seem sensible that businesses requiring no investment can put wads of cash in your pocket every month while on autopilot? Of course it doesn’t. And if a business like this did exist, why would someone give it to you?

So-called opportunities such as these are advertised all over the internet and the print media every day. Most of them – if not all of them – are scams.

A good rule to follow when evaluating business opportunities is that if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
