A few years ago I spent a day at the markets at Byron Bay in Australia. While I was there I witnessed a street performer using a clever trick to attract a crowd to watch his act.
The street performer made money from tips, so attracting as large a crowd as possible was financially beneficial.
By pure chance I happened to be standing near the performer before he began to attract an audience, so I got to witness the entire technique.
The first thing he did was to bring a few passers-by close to him and ask them to help him out. He started off with about a dozen people. He asked these people to start clapping and cheering. The commotion got the attention of a few more people.
The next few dozen people who stopped to find out what all the cheering was for were also recruited to help out. All up about thirty people knew why they were really clapping and cheering – to attract more people.
After a minute or two the crowd had grown considerably. Why? Because people passing by wanted to see what all the cheering was for.
The street performer, therefore, used a crowd to attract a crowd.
Simple isn’t it?
Think about how you can use this same technique for your business.
When a new restaurant opens, the owners might ask their friends and family to dine for free so the car park won’t look empty and the restaurant will look as though it’s filled with happy customers. When a blogger builds up a mailing list of several thousand subscribers, they will advertise the fact on their blog.
Why?
Because nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd.
